Where has STAY been in the last few months?
STAY Summer Institute 2016!
At the end of July, we hosted our 6th gathering for young people at theSTAY Summer Institutein Black Mountain, NC. We had about 40 folks from across the region who showed up, shared their skills, learned from one another, and made new friends & comrades to last a lifetime! Some highlights from the weekend included:
youth-led workshop tracks on media production, pottery, sexy sex ed, vlogging, film screenings, and more!
Cultural sharing around a campfire & music on the world's biggest porch (okay, it was big but not the biggest)
Just Transition Work with KSEC One exciting partnership STAY has been building over the last year has been about growing the conversation around a just economic transition from a youth perspective. STAY has been rolling with theKentucky Student Environmental Coaltion (KSEC) this year to help create opportunities for young people to discuss our changing economy, especially around energy, and what the future we want to live is about. We co-hosted a Hemp Farm tour and Potluck with KSEC back in the summer, where we learned about the feasibility of hemp production as a piece of the transition puzzle. Save the date for our Youth Just Transition meetup on November 20th!
Brushy Fork Institute There were several STAY members in attendance at the annualBrushy Fork Institutein Berea, Kentucky. Brushy Fork is a multi-track institute of training and networking that offers skills to the Appalachian region. Our steering committee member Izzy Broomfield represented STAY on a panel about inter-generational organizing at the Institute!
Highlander's 84th Homecoming Celebration Highlander has always been home for STAY, (Highlander serves as STAY's Fiscal Sponsor) and there were several STAY members in attendance at theAnnual Homecoming Celebration. This year, we celebrated the service of Executive Director Pam McMichael as she announced her retirement. STAY members also participated in a one-day Training for Trainers event for the Economics and Governance Curriculum, and danced the night away toRev. Sekou and the Holy Ghost as the Revive Love Tourkicked off @ Homecoming!
Southern Movement Assembly VI STAY brought our biggest contingent yet (9 folks!) to theSouthern Movement Assembly in ChattanoogaOct. 1st-2nd. STAY members spread across three breakouts to make a plan of action for the south: Protect & Defend, A New Social Economy, and a People's Democracy. STAY knows that building movement infrastructure across the south is key to liberation of all people, and we look forward to moving together and helping to better connect Appalachian youth to movement across the south.
