How to Take Care of Your Friends, Neighbors, and the Collective

Definition of Mutual Aid - mutual aid is a voluntary reciprocal exchange of resources and services for mutual benefit. When we practice mutual aid we are acknowledging that nobody in our community is expendable and it benefits the whole community when everyone has their needs met.
"Physical Distancing and Social Solidarity", not "Social Distancing"
The best way to protect yourself and others is by staying at home and limiting physical contact with other people. Just because there are not reported cases in your area doesn't mean that the virus isn't already there. Due to the federal government not providing enough testing kits and the strict requirements a person needs to meet to receive a test, many people with COVID 19 symptoms are being denied tests. This is why it is really important to practice social possible when at all possible.

This article from the Washington Post
has a really great simulator to show the effectiveness of self isolation.

We know that because the lack of guaranteed sick leave, that social distancing isn't possible for everyone, so here are some measures to keep yourself and others well:
  • Wear a mask- if you don't have one, buy one from the Sewing Sociologists to support a black-owned Appalachian business
  • Try to stay at least 6 feet away from others.
  • Wash your hands properly with soap and water or hand sanitizer. Washing hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds is always best. Use soap and water always if you have visibly soiled hands.
    • Read the poem "Wash Your Hands" by Dori Midnight
  • Cover your cough - not with your hand but with a tissue you can discard, or in your sleeve/elbow.
  • If you are sick with cough, fever or other cold like symptoms, stay home if you can. Understanding that many people are not able to do this because of concern for losing jobs/income that does not provide “sick days”, etc
  • Clean and disinfect your surfaces properly: Corona Virus can live on surfaces for 4-14 days https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/community/home/cleaning-disinfection.html
    • Cleaning means washing with soap and water, which removes germs but does not kill them.
    • Disinfecting means killing germs. Can use diluted bleach solutions or 70% or above alcohol solutions
  • Avoid handshakes: Find new/old ways of greeting (hand on heart, wave, bump elbows)
Practicing Self Care and Social Solidarity
  • Practice compassion, kindness and care, with yourself and others. This decreases stress and improves immune responses.
    • adrienne marie brown has a really good blog post about doing this.
  • Eat as healthy as you can.
  • Get as much sleep as you can
  • Move your body as you are able
  • Know who is most vulnerable to COVID-19 in your community and make sure that they are protected and have their needs met.
    • Half Assed Disabled Prepper  Survival Tips for Preparing for a Coronavirus Quarrantine
  • We are all interconnected and interdependent. Be aware of the impact of racism, anti-Asian bias and sinophobia (anti-Chinese feelings and actions.) Viruses do not target race, and no one race is more likely to carry COVID-19 than another.
    • Listen to NPR’s CodeSwitch podcast: When Xenophobia Spreads Like a Virus
  • Check on your neighbors and friends
    • Start a facebook group for mutual aid
