Appalshop Communications Director 

The Communications Director is a senior leader of Appalshop’s CORE administration, comprised of the Executive Director (to whom the CD reports directly), Institutional Development Director, the Financial Director, and support staff. They will work with Appalshop’s Program Directors, CORE, and others as appropriate to manage the day-to-day requirements of a small communications team. The Communications Director will promote Appalshop’s institutional brand, its projects, and its products across diverse available multimedia platforms. 
The ideal candidate will possess extensive multimedia communications experience, a strong network of media relationships, excellent writing and editing skills, new media expertise, and—most crucially—knowledge of, and an abiding commitment to, central Appalachia and its people.

Hospitality House Boone, NC - Two Positions

Part Time Garden Coordinator

The Garden Coordinator works independently in planning and executing daily activities. This position requires an individual that is self-directed, detail oriented, organized and has proficient agriculture skills. This position is supervised by the Executive Director and works closely with Director of Development both of whom will meet with the Coordinator on a regular basis for supervision, review of work, observation of skills and planning purposes.
The Coordinator will maintain accurate documentation of their time and will submit a bi monthly timesheet. The Coordinator is expected to follow Hospitality House policy and procedures for staff and must be capable of working with a diverse population.

Grant Manager
The Grant Manager is primarily responsible for researching and applying for grants to support the programs and services at the Hospitality House and analyzing and preparing data for reports and grant applications. This position works closely with the Executive Director, Director of Development and the Director of Finance as a part of the Administrative team. This person must have a solid background in Federal, State and Foundation grant writing and working with databases related to grant entry and reporting.

Interns are a crucial part of our work protecting the Appalachian region. Our interns are often given a special project to complete and participate in the day-to-day operations of a campaign. There is no stipend provided for internships, however Appalachian Voices will reimburse pre-approved expenses associated with the internship, such as travel. 

Often, students can earn academic credit while completing an internship with us. At the completion of the internship, the intern will receive a complimentary year membership to Appalachian Voices. A letter of recommendation is available upon request.

Sierra Club  Senior Campaign Representative - Beyond Coal Campaign
Location: Knoxville/Nashville, TN Preferred
Context: Plans, directs, implements, and manages all aspects of TVA strategy within the Beyond Coal Campaign.
Scope:  Develops and directs efforts to move the Tennessee Valley Authority (“TVA”) from coal and gas to clean energy.  Collaborates with various internal departments and programs, partner organizations, and volunteer leadership to ensure execution of a strategic coordinated state-based campaign and manages daily operation of this campaign.  Ensures strategic alignment of the state campaign with regional and national goals and objectives; communicates national priorities and benchmarks to state teams.  Creates and executes state-based campaign work plans and revises plans as appropriate to meet changing needs and requirements.  Identifies resources needed and assigns individual responsibilities.  Prepares and submits weekly progress reports.  Represents the Sierra Club to government officials, the media, business and community leaders, allies and other organizations, and to the public.

The Wilderness Society - Tennessee Public Lands Defense Organizer
Located: Chattanooga/Knoxville
The Wilderness Society (TWS), a national non-profit organization whose mission is to protect wilderness and inspire Americans to care for our wild places. We believe public lands belong to and should benefit all of us. Our organization and work must embody the cultures and perspectives of people and communities across our nation, and connect and inspire people to care about the outdoors.

TWS is seeking an Independent Consultant to serve as a Tennessee Public Lands Defense Organizer (Organizer). This position would be contractual and last one year from the start date with potential for renewal. Rate of pay dependent on experience. The Organizer would need to be based in Chattanooga or Knoxville.
The Tennessee Public Lands Defense Organizer serves in a collaborative role supporting the organization’s Parks and Public Lands Defense campaign (Campaign). The Campaign will defend our nation’s bedrock conservation laws, policies, and regulations; to safeguard existing protected landscapes and our systems of protected lands; and to fight against seizure of federal public lands. The Organizer’s efforts will be focused on developing and implementing an effective state based plan to create a groundswell of local support for our core public lands defense issues including: national monuments, Arctic Refuge defense, public lands takeover and energy on public lands.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES 

  • Implement the Tennessee field plan for the Parks and Public Lands Defense campaign in coordination with TWS staff.
  • Implement a communication strategy in coordination with TWS staff and its consultants.
  • Build and cultivate a Tennessee public lands defense coalition, grassroot activists, grasstops leaders and volunteers in coordination with TWS staff.
  • Perform other tasks as assigned.

BENCHMARKS &DELIVERABLES
  • Develop and cultivate relationships with key public land constituent groups including sportsmen (e.g. fishing and hunting clubs), local businesses, and user groups (e.g. hikers, ATV riders, equestrians).
    • Benchmark: 20 new local groups engaged
  • Build a list of active and engaged grassroot activists. 
    • Benchmark: 1,000 new committed grassroot activists willing to take action on an array of public lands issues
  • Train and engage volunteer leaders to help build the grassroot activists list and provide action plans for them to grow the effort (e.g., tabling, letter writing, phone banking).
    • Benchmark: 25 volunteer leaders are trained and activated
  • Organize community events focused on public lands support (e.g. town halls, rallies, hikes, films screenings etc.) to generate earned media and congressional attention.
    •  Benchmark: 8 community events
  • Facilitate volunteer interacts with targeted Member of Congress (e.g., campaign event, town hall, mobile office hours).
    • Benchmark: 6 interactions with targeted Member of Congress
  • Work with grassroots activist, volunteer leaders, and TWS consultant to implement the state based communication strategy
    •  Benchmark: 3 LTEs submitted per month and 8 Op-Eds submitted over the term of the contract

VIRGINIA

Appalachian Voices - Southwest Virginia Solar VISTA
Location: Norton, VA
Appalachian Voices is excited to announce a new opening in our Norton, Va office. The Southwest Virginia Solar VISTA will help build capacity in Virginia’s coalfield region by playing an instrumental support role in the implementation of the Roadmap for Solar Development in Southwest Virginia. This paid VISTA position will assist Appalachian Voices and our partners to recruit, educate and include community members, small business owners, and other interested citizens to participate in this collaborative process.

The primary work of the VISTA will be to implement the community-focused goals of the Roadmap, which will likely include a residential solarization program in the region. Additionally, the VISTA will educate community members on the benefits of developing solar energy as a sustainable means of energy production and economic development. The VISTA will assist with grant writing that will fund the Roadmap development and implementation process. The VISTA will support our goal of utilizing Abandoned Mine Lands (AML) for solar development.

Radford University - Site Coordinator
The site coordinator would manage the onsite implementation of Radford University extended campus at the SVHEC in Abingdon. Report to and work closely with the Radford University Director of Academic Outreach for the SVHEC. Collaborate with Radford faculty/staff and SVHEC staff to facilitate student recruitment, registration, and services; schedule and ensure facility readiness; coordinate instructional support; and serve as liaison with the SVHEC administration and the Abingdon area community in the planning and delivery of traditional undergraduate and graduate degree programs, as well as other extended education opportunities. Maintain and update RU’s SVHEC website and social media presence. Assist in budgetary management of accounts, payment of invoices, ordering and inventory of equipment and supplies, and act as an activity planner. WV Public Radio - Regional Energy & Environment Reporter

West Virginia Public Broadcasting is looking for an enthusiastic reporter who can bring energy and environmentally focused stories to life and break down complex regional issues for audiences across multiple media platforms.
The energy and environment reporter will be primarily dedicated to producing radio, Web and television content for a regional public media journalism collaboration between West Virginia Public Broadcasting and six public media stations in Kentucky and Ohio, called the Ohio Valley ReSource (OVR). The OVR produces hard-hitting, high-quality multimedia journalism that examines the region’s economy, energy, environment, agriculture, infrastructure and health. The reporter will also serve in a general assignment capacity in West Virginia Public Broadcasting’s newsroom, as needed.

Appalachian Transition Fellow 
If you are committed to building a just and sustainable Appalachia, you can join a select group of emerging leaders from across the region in the Appalachian Transition Fellowship. The fellowship is a community partnership of innovative regional organizations, institutions, and other emerging leaders. The program is designed to be a full-time, 12-month program. 
The selection process is based on the following criteria:
  • Dedicated to the Central Appalachian Region 
  • Demonstrated creativity and innovation in their work or field of study
  • Serious about a career that will support the transition to a sustainable and equitable region
  • Interest in supporting economic development programs 
  • Strong collaboration, teamwork, and group decision-making skills

New Economy Coalition -Membership Director
The New Economy Coalition (NEC) seeks a talented facilitative leader to help support, grow, and enrich our network of over 200 organizations working to build and economy that democratizes wealth and power and puts people and planet first. This is a senior leadership position, responsible for tapping the collaborative potential of allied, but often siloed, groups involved in imagining, campaigning for, and building a New Economy.

The Membership Director will work as part of a collaborative and dynamic programs team, serve on the Staff Leadership Team, supervise the Network Organizer, and report to NEC’s Executive Director. Primary responsibilities include recruiting member organizations, supporting a culture of member to member connectivity, collaboration, and leadership, ensuring the provision of high-quality member services, maintaining healthy ongoing communication between staff and network members, contributing to ongoing organizational learning and development, and participating in high-level organizational strategy and management.
